Procrastination is something that MANY people struggle with for many reasons. One large part of procrastination is a self induced pressure. This very task of putting things off until the last minute to create urgency causes stress and unnecessary negative emotions leading up to the task and often times even after due to poor performance. Subconsciously when a person is procrastinating they are often times associating more pain cycles to the desired activity and outcome than they are pleasure cycles and or benefits to doing the actual tasks. Say goodbye to laziness and hello to conviction!

 

In today’s session, we will be tackling some of these reasons subconsciously to GET THINGS DONE NOW!

 

Some areas we will be covering is:

 

  • Trouble focusing,
  • Being impulsive,
  • Problems sitting 
  • Waiting until the last minute
  • Perfectionism
  • Deadlines,
  • Piles of papers,
  • Being late or forgetting appointment,
  • Starting projects that are never completed,
  • Persistent unreliability –
  • Pay the bills on time 
  • Accomplishing assignments
  • All or nothing mindset
  • Distinguishing between feelings vs. priorities
  • Recognizing you will have time for all the “fun” after things get done
  • The responsibility isn’t as large when tackled in advance
  • Whether there are “fun things, alternative projects, or doing nothing at all”, there are choices and time for all of the above when priorities are taking place
  • Recognizing the opportunity and doing it now regardless of motivation: commitment and discipline over motivation
  • You have less time than you think later, so now is best!
  • Later never comes

  

FOCUS ON YOUR “WHY”:

  • It’s not as big of a thing as you make it out to be.
  • Boredom and working towards your goal will not kill you, instead bring you to life.
  • Focus on the benefits of why you are doing this task to begin with and the feelings of having it done
  • Scheduling it in the calendar and committing to it
  • Be realistic on how long it may take
  • No going back on your “word” – sense of accountability
  • Prepare your environment
  • Reward your good work
  • Forgive yourself if you don’t do your best and try again

Solutions:

  1. Setting priorities
  2. Start with most result producing activities
  3. Avoiding distractions –mindless activities
  4. Setting blocks of undisturbed time
  5. Doing things in small chunks
  6. Creating urgency and self imposed mini deadlines
  7. Increase the value of the project and benefits in your mind
  8. Recognize the sense of accomplishment is much more rich than putting things off
  9. Doing it now can be addicting and fulfilling
  10. The reward is larger when actually doing it now than prolonging the task
  11. No work may seem effortless now, though it’s painful subconsciously and detrimental in the future
  12. Identify with your future self
  13. What would the successful you of the future do in the present? Doing that action now.
